Large Flower & Orange Icaros · Hand Embroidered Shipibo Textile

Large Flower & Orange Icaros · Hand Embroidered Shipibo Textile

US$35.00

These authentic textiles are handmade by native Shipibo-Konibo women of the Ucayali region of Eastern Peru. This circular piece is made with tocuyo fabric with a darker painted border. Tocuyo fabric, which is the traditional, natural cotton is dyed from its natural ecru colour to darker earthy brown using roots and other plant-based dyes, then left to dry out in the hot sun. It's been embroidered with a traditional depiction of a four-petal Ayahuaska flower 'el flor de ayahuaska' surrounded by rows of bright orange icaros.

Embroidered entirely by hand, their designs are influenced by the sacred Ayahuasca plant (The Mother Plant), with complex geometric patterns which are a visual representation of their spirit world. The textiles carry a healing or blessing and are sung like a musical score, which is called an Icaro. The patterns represent the vibrational frequency of the Icaros, as it appears in the visual world of Ayahuasca.

These are original textile pieces coming from the Amazon region, created by working Shipibo mothers and grandmothers. We source them directly from the artesanas themselves and have become friends with many of them over the years.

This circular textile is beautifully intricate, vibrantly colourful, one-of-a-kind and has taken hours of needlework to embroider. You will be the holder of a true piece of Shipibo culture and wisdom, the holder of a physical piece of art that represents their unique bond with nature. 🌿

This textile will arrive with a twine bow, in a reusable 100% cotton ITAYA drawstring bag for safe keeping.
