Green and Orange Geometric Kené · Hand Embroidered Shipibo Textile

Green and Orange Geometric Kené · Hand Embroidered Shipibo Textile

US$38.00

This authentic cotton textile is handmade by native Shipibo-Konibo women of the Ucayali region of Eastern Peru. This particular piece has a bold, symmetrical Kené design at the centre, with two shades of green, orange and purple threads filling the textile entirely. Within the natural environment where the Shipibo live you can see many animals, fish and plants which display Kené patterns.

This piece is made from tocuyo fabric, which is traditional, natural cotton cloth. It is dyed from it’s natural ecru colour to darker brown using roots and other plant-based dyes.

Embroidered entirely by hand, Shipibo designs are influenced by the sacred Ayahuasca plant (The Mother Plant), with complex geometric patterns which are a visual representation of their spirit world. The textiles carry a healing or blessing and are sung like a musical score, which is called an Icaro. The patterns represent the vibrational frequency of the Icaros, as they appear in the visual world of Ayahuasca.

This is an original textile piece coming from the Amazon region. We source these textiles directly from the artesanas themselves, many of whom we’ve become friends with over the five years of living here.

This circular textile is beautifully intricate, vibrantly colourful, one-of-a-kind and has taken hours of needlework to embroider. You will be the holder of a true piece of Shipibo culture and wisdom, the holder of a physical piece of art that represents their unique bond with nature. 🌿

This textile will arrive with a twine bow, in a reusable cotton ITAYA drawstring bag for safe keeping.
